The Wisconsin Writers Association 2023 annual conference happens this October, and in July, they offered three scholarships. To win, members were required to submit 800 words or less stating why they want to attend the conference. I submitted and won!
My essay told the tale of a lonely 10-year-old girl from Wisconsin (me) that used writing as an escape, and how that girl is writing again, but as a means to explain her life instead of escape it. One of my favorite sentences is:
As my memories appear before me like the bellows of an accordion expanding, I see the passage of time as a gift.
I have to admit that I couldn't have done it without the encouragement from the women in my life, who I confided in before I took myself seriously. I had never won anything and thought it was more based on luck. But I was wrong. It took writing and editing and writing and editing and then some. I am very proud of the essay I wrote and submitted.
I am so excited to attend this year's conference and look forward to the authors and friends I'll meet there!
